AvailabilitySpecialized competency restoration services are available for adults through the appropriate court-directed referral process.

What to expect from competency restoration.
The program serves adults who have been found incompetent to stand trial and referred for restoration services. Its purpose is to address psychiatric symptoms that may interfere with participation in the legal process while supporting treatment engagement and structured competency-related learning.
Clinical care focuses on psychiatric stabilization and the person's ability to participate in treatment. Competency-related education addresses relevant concepts and skills within the authorized restoration process. The exact plan depends on clinical presentation, referral requirements and the person's progress.
PBBHC provides treatment and reports through the appropriate channels. The hospital does not make the final legal determination that a person is competent to stand trial; that decision remains the responsibility of the court. The program is not a general admission pathway and does not provide legal representation or legal advice.
What sets competency restoration apart.
Four coordinated steps.
Use the authorized referral pathway
Court and justice-system partners contact PBBHC through the established professional referral process. This program is not accessed through a general walk-in request.
Submit required records
The referral source provides the legal, clinical and administrative information required to review the placement request and determine whether the program can consider admission.
Complete clinical and operational review
PBBHC reviews the person's psychiatric needs, program fit, required level of care and current operating capacity.
Coordinate admission
If the referral is accepted, PBBHC and the authorized partners coordinate timing, transportation, records and other admission requirements.
Questions about competency restoration.

Who can refer someone to the program?+
Competency restoration uses a court-directed and authorized professional referral pathway. It is not a general self-referral or family walk-in service.
Who decides whether a person is competent?+
The court makes legal competency decisions. PBBHC provides psychiatric treatment, competency-related education and information through the required process.
Is competency restoration the same as general adult inpatient care?+
No. Both are inpatient psychiatric services, but competency restoration has a specific court-directed purpose and referral process.
How long does restoration take?+
There is no single public length for every placement. Timing may depend on clinical progress, the authorized restoration process and court requirements.
Can the hospital answer legal questions?+
No. PBBHC can explain its clinical program and referral procedures, but it does not provide legal advice or replace the person's attorney or the court.
